This past Saturday, Wawasee Cross Country proudly hosted the First Annual Dave Stookey Invitational, honoring longtime coach and beloved Wawasee Warrior, Dave Stookey. Known for his love of our school and community, Coach Stookey inspired countless athletes during his years of coaching. Holding our inaugural invitational in his memory was a fitting tribute—and the Warriors made sure to celebrate him in the best way possible: with dominant performances on their brand-new home course.
The atmosphere was electric, as fans, alumni, community members, and families filled the course to cheer on the Warriors in this special debut event. Many former athletes who ran for Coach Stookey returned to honor his legacy, making the day even more meaningful.
The Lady Warriors kicked off their 2025 season in style, capturing a commanding team victory. All seven varsity girls placed in the top 16, showcasing depth and determination. Senior Mia Hodgson led the way, followed closely by sophomore Bailyn Likens, who impressed with a 4th-place overall finish in her first-ever cross country race. Sophomore Leah Hurst ran with poise, while Finley Brady set a new personal best. Freshmen Sophie Hunter and senior newcomer Sophia Smith turned in strong debut races, and senior Heatherlynn Holder dropped over 45 seconds for a huge PR. The team also celebrated their seniors: Mia Hodgson, Heatherlynn Holder, Sophia Smith, and foreign exchange students Elisa De Ro and Valerie Born, who made their senior morning unforgettable on the new course.
The Warrior boys matched the energy, seizing first place as a team in dominant fashion. All seven varsity runners placed in the top 15. Mason Worrell led the pack with a 2nd-place finish and a new PR, breaking the 17-minute barrier for the first time. Andrew Waugh also ran a personal best, while freshmen Jude Rhodes and Kolton Eaton completed their first high school 5Ks with grit. Seniors Nick Moreland, Andrew Waugh, and Drew Yoder were honored during the awards ceremony, making it a special day for them as well.
The inaugural Dave Stookey Invitational was more than just a meet—it was a celebration of legacy, community, and Warrior pride. Coach Stookey’s memory lives on in the athletes who continue to run with heart, determination, and love for Wawasee. With both teams setting the tone early, the 2025 season promises to be one filled with excitement and success.
