WAWASEE COMMUNITY SCHOOL CORPORATION
SCHOOL BOARD TO FILL VACANCYWawasee Community Schools announces the vacancy on its school board created by the resignation of Steve Baut, who served as a school board member since January 1, 2023. His dedication to and caring for our school corporation, staff and students will be sorely missed. Indiana law requires Wawasee Community Schools to promptly fill Mr. Baut’s remaining term on the school board, which runs through December 31, 2026.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Diane Woodworth explained that state law requires the remaining school board members, by a majority vote, to fill the vacancy by appointing a person who meets all residence and other qualifications required of a regularly elected board member.
Indiana law, school board policy, and Wawasee Community Schools’ election plan require that candidates for this seat on the Board of School Trustees be:
- An American citizen;
- A qualified, registered voter;
- A resident within the school corporation boundaries and the State of Indiana continuously for a minimum of one (1) year prior to the date of the appointment.
- A resident of the school corporation’s 3rd District, which consists of Kosciusko County’s Van Buren Township and the part of Jefferson Township that is a part of the school corporation.
An application questionnaire will be provided to those residents who submit a letter of interest to the below address. Applicants must email or hand deliver a completed questionnaire as outlined above by Monday, March 16, 2026, at 8:00 AM. Time Line for School Board to Fill Board Vacancy
- March 3, 2026 Publish announcement of vacancy & procedure for filling vacancy.
- Monday, March 16, 2026, at 8:00 AM Deadline to submit application and completed questionnaire.
- Monday, March 16, 2026, at 5:00 PM School Board meets in Executive Session and will review applications for the position (only applicable if more than three applicants).
- Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 3:00 PM (Attendance required of three finalists-applicants) School Board will interview finalists-applicants for the position at a school board meeting. Interviews will begin at 3:00 PM.
- Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 6:00 PM, following interviews, School Board will take official action/public vote to name the person to fill vacancy. Board member will be sworn in immediately following the vote or the next day.
